Join us in beginning preparations for the Dead of the Dead season in the Tlacolula Valley! We visit the Tlacolula día de plaza, or big market day, make our own chocolate for the big day, and visit bakers making pan de yema the traditional bread served during Day of the Dead, where we have the chance to decorate our own. 

Includes:

  • Personalized guide and translation service by a native English speaker

  • Comfortable transportation round trip from Oaxaca city (1 hour each way)

  • Visit to Tlacolula Sunday market; this is a día de plaza, when people from the surrounding communities come to the market to buy and sell goods: organic and heirloom vegetables from their fields, wild honey, freshly baked bread, traditional mezcal, and handmade tortillas

  • Breakfast at market

  • Chocolate making workshop with a 91 year old cocinera tradicional from scratch, toasting the cacao, taking it to the mill, and forming it into bars to be used in cooking and hot chocolate

  • Take home some of the chocolate we make

  • Visit to a local bakers making pan de muerto, the traditional bread consumed during the season and participate in decorating the bread

  • Lunch of local delicacies prepared by a cocinera tradicional

  • Tasting of our selection of traditional mezcal

  • Visit to an antiques collector, learning about the pieces and history of mezcal in the region

  • Drinking water and light snacks

  • Donation to women’s cooperative annual project
