Limpia (Spirtual Cleansing) in Teotitlán

Approximately 15 minute duration

Cost per person: $20 USD/375 MXN

  • A spiritual cleansing performed by a healer by rubbing selected herbs on your head, neck, arms, and legs (you are fully clothed during the ceremony) in combination with rubbing alcohol or traditional mezcal to release the properties of the herbs. Afterwards the healer rubs an egg over you to extract stress or bad energy. The egg is then cracked into a glass of water and your energy is read. This experience is a good fit for those who want to learn about traditional medicine and its everyday uses. 

*This experience can be added on to a Teotitlán Traditional Cooking Class, Teotitlán Chocolate Making Workshop, or Teotitlán Natural Dyes & Weaving Workshop (we do not offer this experience on its own).

Temezcal

Join us for a traditional steam bath temezcal in the home of our community partners. We will learn about the history and tradition of this practice as a form of preventative medicine in the community to combat fatigue, stress, and bad sleep. The women of Teotitlán have been using this steam bath as a way to heal and gather for centuries. We will participate in a spirirtual cleansing or limpia, a Zapotec massage, and an hour long session in the temezcal followed by a nourishing meal.

  • Learn about traditional healing practices in the community from our hosts, learning about the plants used and practices preformed for thing like ojo and sustso

  • Participate in a limpia (spiritual cleansing)

  • Traditional Zapotec massage (performed while clothed, 15-20 minute duration)

  • One hour steam bath in the temezcal, rest and acclimate

  • Option to learn about weaving and natural dyes while we rest

  • Nourisning dinner by a cocinera tradicional such as chicken or vegetable soup and atole

  • A chance to purchase rugs or other woven goods (such as bags) directly from our hosts (price of items not included)

*A bathing suit, sandals, and a change of warm comfortable clothing for after the steam bath are all recommended for this experience.

Santa Catarina Minas

Healing with Mezcal in Minas  

Schedule: 9am-6pm

Cost per person: $200 USD/3,760 MXN (Open Outing 2-6 participants)

Includes:

  • Personalized guide and translation (Spanish/English)

  • Comfortable transportation round trip from Oaxaca city (1 hour each way)

  • Big breakfast at our favorite roadside comedor where everything is cooked on a woodfire

  • Tour of an agave nursery and artisanal palenque, which produces small batch clay pot distilled mezcal where we learn about the mezcal production process from seed to bottle. The palenque is owned and operated by family that has been making mezcal for 4 generations and currently produces mezcal for national and international sale while committing to sustainable agriculture and giving back to the community

  • Tasting of Minero mezcal made on site including mezcal infused with herbs for traditional healing purposes 

  • A chance to purchase mezcal directly from the producers (price not included), our help packing it for travel

  • Lunch at the palenque of regional delicacies prepared by a cocinera tradicional 

  • Limpia (spiritual cleansing) performed by our local hosts using herbs, mezcal, and incense

  • Discussion with the traditional healer and mezcal producers about healing methods and the combined use of mezcal and herbs
